this was really helpful, and it sparked my love for coding in HTML!

Outstanding。 I recommend this for upper elementary kids。

Engagingly designed with fun project ideas。 It ramps up fast in the JavaScript section。 Just a note that in the JS for the game, hyphens (minus signs) should be used but en dashes appear in the book。 Also for the online resources, whoever named the image files capitalised them instead of using what's referenced in the CSS。 Engagingly designed with fun project ideas。 It ramps up fast in the JavaScript section。 Just a note that in the JS for the game, hyphens (minus signs) should be used but en dashes appear in the book。 Also for the online resources, whoever named the image files capitalised them instead of using what's referenced in the CSS。 。。。more

。。。more

I learnt a lot of web page design from this one book。 Practical coding examples and fun missions to work for。 It is supposed to be for kids but I as an adult found it very useful。 The final chapter was a little challenging。

Great for youngsters learning the basics。

I read this book back before I had looked at any Web code and it had some helpful bits。 I would recommend for beginners。 You will however have to read up on extra stuff to build anything interesting。 Good read for enthusiastic young people with little experience。

I think this book does a great job at making the language of coding as easy to understand as possible for middle grade students。

I think one of the coolest things about this book is that the makers of it are all 18 and under!! This book is designed to help kids learn HTML, CSS, and Javascript in a hands-on manner by building a website, and app and designing a game。 There are tips and support throughout the book。 It is a fun and useful approach to learning code and programming。 I was telling one of my students about it and they were very interested。

Learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and Build a Website, App, and Game is a good tool for those that want to get started with some serious coding, while still having some fun。 The book is user friendly and well organized, with challenges that will keep young coders engaged and focused。 I really like the idea of giving the coders a mission to complete, and the goofy artwork that is included。 I do think that this is for those dedicated to learning, and those youngsters that have already tried some of the basic coding games and tools in the past。 Some of the challenges might be too much for those that are easily frustrated or just casually interested in coding。 I know that I did not attempt the app making or some of the more complicated coding, mainly because I did not have the time and enthusiasm to put in the effort。 However, those children and even adults that want to get a handle on coding and are ready to get to it will get solid instruction and a good foundation。 。。。more

A book that could help young coders。 May need adult assistance to follow the directions。

Because it's a fun premise for teaching kids to code, and I really love it, but I already knew how to do almost everything the book teaches。 I did a two-semester HTML/JavaScript/CSS web coding class several years ago and took AP Computer Science (which teaches Java, similar to JavaScript) in my junior year。 I already love to code–thus the fact that I'll be majoring in it when I start college (two weeks from now!)–so I don't really need the introductory material anymore。"Why did you agree to review it, then?" you may be asking。 It's a fair question, but honestly, I was hoping I could pass it along to my youngest brother and see him interacting with it。 He's frankly more of the target age, and he was just getting into coding at that point。 But he took one look at the book, saw that it didn't involve coding mods for Minecraft, and said he wasn't going to do it。 Hmmph。But honestly, after flipping through it, I still think Get Coding! would be absolutely perfect for just the right kid。 I probably could have gotten my brother hooked on it if I'd tried sooner–heck, I probably would have gotten hooked on it if I'd gotten it before I took the other classes。 It teaches a lot of interesting skills in a meaningful way, tying them together with letters and "missions" connected to this stolen gem that the coder is helping to protect from the "Bond Brothers" who want to steal it back。 You have to make a website for exchanging information about the gem, then password-protect it, then build a checklist web app, then plan a route through a city (by embedding Google Maps), then make a game to train the security guards at the museum, then put together a full website to inform the public about the gem。 It's sequential and interesting, and there are little newspaper articles to go along with the letters at each step。If anything, I worry that the book packs too much of a punch at just 208 pages。 It moves extraordinarily quickly, and while it explains things well I bet there will be kids who will get stuck early on, copy the code straight from the book without analyzing it, and struggle to understand the trickier concepts further on。 That was definitely a problem when my brother and I worked through the web design textbooks a few years ago。 The support website for the book, getcodingkids。com, actually looks very helpful, though, so it could be okay。Basically, if you or your kid thinks the book's "mission" gimmick will make coding fun, then definitely buy Get Coding! If you don't think it will hold interest, though, then you would probably be better hunting around to find something that will be more attractive。Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I love the idea behind Get Coding! Learn HTML, CSS & JavaScript and build a website, app & game。 I think the developers can really make this work。 The 'helping of the Professor', the slow reveal of the 'story', and other elements combine to make learning feel a bit less like learning and a bit more like fun。 And even though there is good bit of repetition of typing code in the exercises (as there should be) it never really gets boring。However, there are some problems with the coding that need to I love the idea behind Get Coding! Just a few errors to fix。 Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for review consideration。 。。。more

ARC provided by publisherUnlike many of the coding initiatives to get kids coding, this book plunges young computer experts right into creating a web site with HTML and goes further with Java Script and even building an app。 The instructions are clear and precise, and the projects that are addressed are ones that beginning coders will definitely want to use。 There is also a "mission" that fictional characters talk about in the text。 Each chapter starts with a message (in 4 point font) about what ARC provided by publisherUnlike many of the coding initiatives to get kids coding, this book plunges young computer experts right into creating a web site with HTML and goes further with Java Script and even building an app。 The instructions are clear and precise, and the projects that are addressed are ones that beginning coders will definitely want to use。 There is also a "mission" that fictional characters talk about in the text。 Each chapter starts with a message (in 4 point font) about what Professor Bairstone and his colleague Dr。 Ruby Day need to do。 Scattered through the instructions are more tasks tangent to this mission that go along with whatever is being designed。 The artwork for these characters is a bit goofy and appealing, and in the final version will be in full color。 The information in Get Coding is also available on their web site, but the book would be useful to have at one's side while working on the computer if it's hard for you to toggle back and forth between screens。 There's a lot of information, it's very useful, and it's formatted in a good way with fun pictures。 I'm a little torn about this one。 It's fantastic that it's giving children actual coding information instead of drag-and-drop websites。 A couple of years ago, when our students participated in the Day of Coding, the organizer couldn't tell me what language they were using。 WAAAAAY back in the day, I coded in Basic, one of the versions of C, HTML, and JavaScript。 I designed the school website in HTML in about 2000。 Even so, this book was a little bit of a challenge for me。 I never did try to make an app。 It was too daunting。Really motivated students who have someone to help them or who have worked with code before will find this to be helpful and amusing。 For my students, many of whom don't have any coding experience, I am looking for something much simpler and less dense。 If this hadn't included the "mission", it would have been more useful for my school's needs, but also less amusing。 。。。more

Get Coding!, is an absolutely fabulous and essential book for children if they want to know how to code a webpage, or build an app。 In today’s society, we are relying on more and more computerised machinery, and the internet is exceptionally useful and popular, and is only going to become even more important in years to come。I’ve believed for a long time that they should teach coding in schools。 I remember having an old Amstrad computer as a child and learning how to code, spending hours copying Get Coding!, is an absolutely fabulous and essential book for children if they want to know how to code a webpage, or build an app。 In today’s society, we are relying on more and more computerised machinery, and the internet is exceptionally useful and popular, and is only going to become even more important in years to come。I’ve believed for a long time that they should teach coding in schools。 I remember having an old Amstrad computer as a child and learning how to code, spending hours copying code from a book and then all it did was to make one little image move across the screen。 Today, coding is much simpler, easier and creates a lot more than a single moving image。This book will give children the knowledge to build a webpage, create a password, build and app, plan a route and make a mini-game。 It will also show them how to code using the three modern essential languages HTML, CSS and Javascript。 The only things that are needed to be able to use this book are a computer/Mac and the internet。The instructions are exceptionally easy to understand and follow。 They are also split into two so that there is one set for PC and one for Mac computers。 Be aware that the instructions are written in American English – this is because computer code is written in American English, so I can only presume that they didn’t want to confuse the children。Children will love this book and it will teach them valuable skills for the future。 It will also give them a sense of achievement as they complete each of the six missions。Reviewed by Stacey at www。whisperingstories。com 。。。more
